The Hongi
The Hongi is a Maori cultural way of greeting someone they meet.
This is something that is very important, and some people may think that it is weird or funny but it is actually something that people should respect.
Welcome to the Winter Learning Journey programme! It is great to see that you have joined us and already posted six blogs. Wow - impressive!
I hope that you have enjoyed the experience so far. I have certainly enjoyed reading your blogs and learning about the hongi, the love that kiwis have for the out-of-doors and the important role that farming plays in the lives of many New Zealanders.
I actually have a very good friend who married a farmer and they live on a diary farm in the Manawatu area of New Zealand. It is about 6 hours south of Auckland by car. Kate loves her job on the farm but it is pretty hard work! Do you think that you would ever like to work and/or live on a farm?
I really hope that you will have time to continue blogging with us over the next two weeks.
Thanks so much for getting back to me! I'm really intrigued to read that you would love to work on a farm one day. What kind of farm would you prefer? Dairy? Crops? Livestock (eg. cows)?
My friends who own the dairy farm find the work to be really rewarding but the hours are a bit tough. They have to wake up at 3:30 a.m. every day in order to get out into the milking sheds in time to milk each cow before the Fonterra milk truck comes around to pick up their produce. I'm not sure that I would be able to get up that early every day. Would you?
